The main objective of SFMP is to investigate and develop soil fertility management recommendations for optimum tea production. The major activities implemented under this programme include: determination of soil fertility constraints in major tea growing areas of Tanzania, testing of new /alternative fertilisers for farmers recommendations and investigating the effects of mechanical harvesting on physical properties of soil and provision of soil and leaf samples analytical services at Ngwazi Laboratory.
Recently, a countrywide soil survey was completed in Njombe, Lushoto and Mufindi Districts in order to map out the soil nutrient and physical status for developing location specific soil management recommendations.
